- About UA Libraries
Users requiring extensive research assistance (including assistance with electronic information resources) and training on the adaptive technologies equipment may request research assistance from the instruction librarian in the appropriate library. If possible, extensive research assistance should be requested in advance.
General Reference Requests
General reference requests usually can be accommodated at the reference desks in each library without prior arrangement.
In Gorgas Library, staff members in the Information Services Department (the government documents and reference collections) and in the music, current periodicals, and reserve units will retrieve materials in their areas for library users with special needs if time permits. Books and journals from the general stack areas will be retrieved for users with special needs by the staff at the circulation desk. To ensure prompt service, it's best to call ahead. Click here for the Gorgas departmental telephone numbers.
Users at Bruno Business Library, McLure Education Library, and Rodgers Science & Engineering Library should request assistance retrieving materials at the circulation or reference desk in each library. Materials are retrieved for all users at Hoole Special Collections Library. Click here for the telephone number for each of these libraries.
The staff in the microforms collections in Gorgas Library (2nd floor) and in each of the other libraries will assist users in retrieving materials and in operating the equipment. If extensive assistance is needed, users are advised to call ahead to ensure the availability of such service. Click here for the Microforms telephone numbers.
Telephone and Electronic Reference
Library users with hearing impairments may use the Alabama Relay Network for telephone assistance at any library service point. A TTY is available in Hoole Library (205) 348-0522. If you prefer, you may link to Ask-A-Librarian to send a reference request electronically.
Photocopying assistance is available at each library as time permits. Library users are encouraged to contact the staff in the copy center or at the circulation desk in advance for this service. Click here for the photocopying telephone numbers.
Specialized library orientation tours and instruction can be arranged through the instruction librarian in the appropriate library
