			<description>James Marten is Professor and Chair of the History Department at Marquette University.   He is also serving as President of the Society of Civil War Historians.   His research and publications have covered a wide range of topics from dissent in Civil War era Texas to the history of childhood.   His best known book is The Children’s Civil War published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1998, a pioneering work in social and intellectual history. 			<description> Autherine Lucy Foster visited the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library on Thursday, November 30, 2006. She discussed her own personal experiences at UA from 1950s through the present. Ms. Foster reflected upon her life leading up to to her short-lived enrollment at The University of Alabama as the first African-American student in 1956. She also discussed her experiences and the aftermath of those days, as well as her time at UA as a graduate student in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as thoughts on her experience and how it relates to the future leaders in higher education. This event was part of Dr. Steven Katsinasâ graduate course on the history of higher education.
