Biography:
Literary scholar, University professor, administrator. Born– July 3, 1901, Pittsboro, N.C. Married– Palmer Daugette. Children– One. Education– Virginia Military Institute, A.B., 1920; Harvard University, A.M, 1922, Ph.D., 1929. Taught at Washington & Lee University, 1922-1923, at University of California at Los Angeles, 1924-1926; Williams College, 1928-1930; Jacksonville State University, 1933-1973, where he served as head of the English Department and dean of the School of Humanities (1972-73). Published many articles in professional journals. The William and Palmer Calvert Amphitheater at Jacksonville State is named in honor of Professor Calvert and his wife, who was head of the physical education department at the school. Died April 7, 1987.
