Married–Margie Brooke, 1979.  Children–two.  University of Alabama, BA, 1973.  Writer for The Birmingham News 1973-2000; editorial page editor, 1998-2000.  1991–awarded Pulitzer Prize. 1992–Finalist for the National Headliners Award from the Press Club of Atlantic City.  1994–nominated for a second Pulitzer and for a National Education Writers Award.   Died February 22, 2000.
