Awarded fellowships; Fulbright, American philosophical Society, Guggenheim, American Council of Learned Societies. Conducted Dancy Memorial Lecture, University of Montevallo, 1973. Awarded emeritus status on his retirement at Princeton, 2001. Honorary D.Phil., Greifswald University, 2001.
